Just
when we think we've explored the best that Ontario had to offer,
along comes French River! The French River Region encompasses the
area between Lake Nipissing and Georgian Bay, an expansive network
of rivers, lakes, bays, islands, gorges, rapids, delta, cliffs and
beaches. The French River region promises us beautiful landscape for
adventure, and continues the theme of exploration through Voyageur
history we embarked on last year.
About the French River Region:
Our host site of Alban, ON lies in the midst of the maze of
adventure that is the French River Region. The French River itself
flows from the southwest end of Lake Nipissing, 195 m above sea
level, to the northeast shores of Georgian Bay, through both heavily
forested areas and bare, open stretches of Canadian Shield. The area
contains more than 200 km of other navigable water courses and
channels which vary from narrow, enclosed steep-walled gorges, falls
and rapids, to broad expanses of open water.
The region's diverse flora and fauna range from towering white pines
to wetland chain ferns. The rugged topography of the Canadian Shield
supports more than 450 plant species, some rare. One of the largest
populations of white-tailed deer in the province inhabits the rocky
forests on the river shores. You'll marvel at the night skies, and
relive the fascinating history of the early explorers who traveled
these waterways.
